A series of prototype decorticating machines were developed to prove Adrian Clarke’s concepts and bring the technology to commercialisation. Today, TCI has sold numerous D8 Decorticator machines and is actively marketing the revolutionary capabilities of the D8 Decorticator to farmers, agricultural cooperatives, and organisations worldwide.
The D8 Decorticator machine is ready for manufacturing to order by TCI’s contracted engineers at Austeng in Geelong, and can be tailored for use in respective markets. This hemp processing system uses a unique and revolutionary process to decorticate hemp stems and other bast crops, whether green or dry, without the need for retting – a costly, time-consuming, and damaging process.
Retting, derived from the Dutch word for ‘rotting,’ has traditionally been used to separate hemp fibre from the plant’s core. However, this process degrades the quality of the fibre, reducing the available fibre and hurd for commercial use by up to 80%.
This is why hemp fibre has historically been more expensive compared to cotton and synthetic fibres, and why it often loses its natural strength, restricting its use in composite materials.
With TCI’s cutting-edge technology, the D8 Decorticator machine separates hemp fibre from the plant in a fraction of the time required by traditional methods. This method results in a much higher quality and larger quantity of fibre, which is significantly more valuable for industrial use. The hurd, or core of the plant, is also produced in higher quantity and quality, making it a valuable resource for numerous industries.
